Philadelphia Hardware Group’s commercial products are all now approved by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association to be BHMA Certified. That means all of our commercial products have been tested and certified to BHMA standards.
About BHMA Product Certification
In addition to ensuring hardware quality and performance through its development of standards, BHMA also sponsors third-party certification of hardware products. Third-party certification is a formal process for independently verifying that a product meets specific requirements or criteria. Under the BHMA-sponsored certification program, manufacturers voluntarily submit a hardware product to independent laboratory testing to confirm that the product fully meets the criteria of its ANSI/BHMA standard. To make sure a certified product continues to conform to its underlying standard, in-factory audits of the product are conducted periodically. Products unable to pass the auditing process face loss of certification. BHMA publishes an annual directory of all BHMA certified hardware products. Browse the 2013 BHMA Certified Products Directory from the home page of their website:www.buildershardware.com Bound copies of the directory can be obtained directly from BHMA.
Currently the BHMA-sponsored certification program covers the following categories of Philadelphia Hardware Group’s commercial hardware; the categories and the ANSI/BHMA standards to which they are tested are as follows:
Standard for ANSI/BHMA A156.1 – BUTTS AND HINGES
1.1 This Standard establishes requirements for lightweight, standard weight, heavy weight and detention hinges. Cycle tests, lateral and vertical wear tests, friction tests, strength tests, finish tests, and material and dimensional requirements are included.
1.2 Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions.
1.3 Consult NFPA 80 - 1999 for Fire Doors and Windows concerning hinge requirements for fire doors.
Approved October 11, 2006.
Standard for ANSI/BHMA A156.4 – 2008 DOOR CONTROLS – CLOSERS
1.1 This Standard contains requirements for door closers surface mounted, concealed in the door, overhead concealed and concealed in the floor. Also included are pivots for floor closers. Criteria for conformance include cycle, operational, closing force and finish tests. Optional tests which shall be specified separately are also included.
1.2 Tests in this Standard are performed under neutral air pressure laboratory conditions and between 60 and 85 degrees F. In actual usage results vary because of installation, maintenance, and environmental conditions. Actual closer performance is affected by fluctuating ambient conditions such as wind and pressure differentials, consult factory for recommendations.
1.3 Use on Fire Doors A door closer used on labeled fire door assemblies shall be listed or labeled by a nationally recognized independent testing laboratory, and be subject to a periodic in-plant follow-up service. Consult the authority having jurisdiction for the appropriate fire test requirements.
Approved by ANSI October 1, 2008.
Standard for ANSI/BHMA A156.3 – 2008 EXIT DEVICES
1.1 This standard establishes requirements for exit devices and trim, automatic and self-latching flush bolts, removable mullions, coordinators, and carry-open bars. Performance criteria include cycle, operational, strength, material evaluation, and finish tests. Functions and types are described and numbered.
1.2 Tests described in this standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions.
Approved by ANSI September 24, 2008.
Standard for ANSI/BHMA A156.13 – MORTISE LOCKS
1.1 This Standard establishes performance requirements for Mortise Locks and Latches and includes operational, cycle, strength, material evaluation, security, and finish tests, and dimensional criteria.
1.2 Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results may vary because of installation, maintenance, and environmental conditions.
1.4 Grade Qualifications (Also see Appendix A)
1.4.1 Two classifications of Grades are described in this Standard. Manufacturers shall indicate separately, for both an Operational Grade and a Security Grade level of mortise locks and latches. The minimum acceptable grade level for Operational and Security grades shall be a grade 3.
1.4.1.1 Operational Grades shall meet the requirements of Sections 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13.
1.4.1.2 Security Grades shall meet the requirements of Section 12.
1.4.2 Any function shall be tested for qualification under Operational Grades and all other functions shall be considered as meeting the criteria provided the lock case and operating parts are of the same construction as that of the lock previously tested.
1.4.3 Function F21 or a similar function with dead bolts and function F04 or a similar function without dead bolts to be certified shall be tested with the trim for qualification under Security Grades. All other functions where access is prevented shall be considered as meeting the criteria provided the lock case and operating parts are of the same construction as that of the lock previously tested.
